What Is Easy Read?
Easy Read is a writing format that uses short, simple sentences to convey information clearly. It often includes images, symbols, or illustrations to support each key message. The recommended font size is 16pt, and documents should ideally be no more than 20 pages. This format benefits individuals with learning disabilities but is also great for anyone who values clear and straightforward text.

The Easy Read format is preferred by many individuals with learning disabilities. Easy read documents can increase the rate that someone learns as well as, boost productivity in the workplace or educational learning.

The Equality Act (2010) requires all public service organisations to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for individuals with a disability, so that they receive the correct provisions and treatment. Providing Easy read information is a key ‘reasonable adjustment’ that may be needed by people with learning disabilities & those without.

Key things to think about
Wording – Short, straight forward sentences are used to explain the most important messages you want to get across.

Images – Images are carefully selected to help a person understand the key message in the sentence or paragraph.

Layout – The design of the information must ensure that it is easy to follow, remains accessible and looks good. Producing information in easy read should never result in poor quality material.
